Alternate Daily Cover
Southwest Environment Services, Inc. is a leader in providing Alternate Daily Cover
specifically for use in the landfill industry.
What is Daily Cover?
Federal and State regulations require that landfills cover their solid waste daily with a minimum of 6 inches of dirt.
This “Daily Cover” is intended to:
- Minimize disease vectors and animal attraction.
- Control leachate and erosion.
- Reduce fire hazard potential.
- Minimize wind-blown litter.
- Reduce noxious odors.
- Provide an aesthetic appearance.
- Allow accessibility regardless of weather.
Why Alternate Daily Cover?
Because of the cost to place six or more inches of dirt each day as a daily cover, and the value of air space that it consumes, many landfill sites
are using Alternate Daily Cover. The savings in dirt hauling costs, and especially the value of air space, are very significant. Short term costs savings involved in switching to a fiber-based daily cover are immediate; the long term costs savings involved with extending the site, while longer to realize, are immense.
What is your Airspace Worth?
Landfill airspace is a valuable resource. It is essentially the only thing a landfill has to sell.
In fact, you may think of your landfill as WASTE-MART; selling airspace to safely store solid waste. The value of your air-space is very critical to the landfill business. Several factors affect that value. They include:
- Type of Waste
- Compact Density
- Tipping Fee
- Compaction of Active Site
